What a 4x4 matrix switcher does in a training room
A 4x4 matrix switcher is a crosspoint switcher that distributes four video sources across four displays and assigns each source to each destination individually, so that four screens can show four different pictures at the same time.
What is transmitted is an HDMI signal including audio. The sockets on the units are DVI-D and can be screwed down, so that in a fixed installation the connection holds even where a plugged-in connector works its way out of its socket over the years.
The picture stays as it is. It is neither compressed nor scaled but passed through at the native resolution of the source, which is why cameras, microscopes and visualisers can be connected alongside computers and notebooks – devices whose picture any encoding would visibly damage.
EDID management keeps the exchange between source and screen stable. Each source is given a fixed answer about what is connected at the output and does not have to negotiate that exchange again every time the routing changes.

Each of the four sources is present at each of the four outputs; switching decides only which of them a screen actually shows.

The sockets are DVI-D and what is transmitted is an HDMI signal with audio. The matrix works without a network connection and without software on the connected computers.
Operation
Switched where the teaching happens
The assignment can be changed from a touchscreen, from an existing control system over RS-232 or from the iPad app. The tablet connects to the system over Bluetooth and joins no network.

In use
When four destinations are to show different things
In a laboratory each input carries a different source: the instructor PC, a notebook, a ceiling camera, a microscope. The matrix decides screen by screen which of them is visible – two groups can work on different tasks at two displays while the rest of the room follows a third.
